Subject Holdings

The predominant part of monograph and periodical holdings dealing with Art and Visual History is shelved systematically according to the Regensburg Classification Scheme (RVK) at the Jacob-und-Wilhelm-Grimm-Zentrum. Call numbers start with the letter combinations:

• LH  (General Art History; Art History of specific genres)
• LI  (Monographs on particular artists)
• LK–LO  (Art of individual countries)
• AP 90000 ff.  (Photography)

The holdings can be found at the following locations:

Textbook collection (EG, Area A): The collection contains multiple copies of basic introductory works and textbooks. These books can be borrowed by students of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

Journal display shelves (1. OG, Area C): Here, the unbound current journal issues are being displayed. Journals can generally not be borrowed. The call numbers of journals on Art and Visual History start with LD. By now, many journals are available digitally. More information on this can be found in the Electronic Journals Library (EZB).

Bound journals (2. OG, Area B): Here you can find the bound journal volumes from previous years. Call Numbers of journals on Art and Visual History start with the letters LD. Journals can generally not be borrowed. Partly, these journals are available online as well; in fact, many of them are accessible online only. Books on Art and Visual History (3. OG, Areas C, D, E, and F): The book stock contains encyclopedias, reference books, monographs and anthologies. These are shelved thematically according to the Regensburg Classification Scheme, call numbers starting with LH, LI and LK–LO. An overview of that classification system with its particular subdivisions can be found on the website of the Regensburg Classification Scheme (RVK). If there are no special markings in or on the books (for example a yellow non-lending label), they can be borrowed. With regard to the larger and heavier books, we ask that you borrow and return them at the service counters instead of the self-issue machines.

Books on Photography (2. OG, Area A): Literature on artistic and applied photography as well as on the history of photography can be found among the call numbers AP 90000 ff. in Area 2 of the second floor (2. OG). This stock can generally also be borrowed.

Older books stock (3. OG, Area F and G): These holdings are arranged by formal call numbers starting with “Kunst…”, assorted according to their formats. A systematic search at the stacks is not possible here, since these books are shelved in the order of their acquisition. Generally these books are not borrowable.
