Scandinavian Studies

Information about the Holdings

The foundation of the library of the German Seminary in 1887 laid the foundation for the Nordic holdings of the university library.

Since the establishment of the Department of Northern European Studies in 1994, the holdings of Scandinavian Studies are being fostered even more. This department emerged from a fusion of Scandinavian Studies at Freie Universität and of Nordic Studies at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and subsequently led to the fusion of the associated library holdings.

The holdings of Scandinavian Studies in the Branch Library of German Studies / Scandinavian Studies currently amount to 60,000 media. These holdings contain literature on Finnish Studies and on Scandinavian languages, as well as the corresponding literatures. They are complemented by media on regional history, politics and culture.

There is countless media in the Branch Library, however the Jacob-und-Wilhelm-Grimm-Zentrum also shelves holdings pertaining to Scandinavian Studies. In addition to print books and journals, there is also many electronic resources available for peruse. Please consider that on private computers, these resources can only be accessed either via eduroam within the university network or via Open VPN from home.
