Subject Holdings

The monograph and journal collection for higher education research, which was maintained as the special subject collection (SSG) “Higher Education” by the University Library of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin from 1998 to 2013, is located at the Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm Center. Research literature pertaining to the study of higher education can be found throughout the building in several locations.

• Periodical racks (1. OG, area A): The recent unbound issues of the periodicals to which we currently subscribe are displayed on the first floor. Journals of higher education research can be found under the call numbers beginning with the letters AL. Periodicals of science studies (science history and organisation of the sciences) with the call numbers AK 10000 - AK 53900 are relevant for the field as well. Journals, in general, are for reference only.
• Bound periodicals (2.OG, area B): The bound volumes of older periodical issues are shelved on the second floor under the call numbers AL and AK 10000 - AK 53900. Journals, in general, are for reference only.
• Research literature on higher education (2. OG, Bereich A): The collection of monographs, anthologies, conference proceedings, and bibliographies is shelved in accordance with the Regensburg Classification Scheme (RVK) and can be found under the call numbers beginning with the letters AL. For an overview of the meaning of the classes and subdivisions (e.g. AL 30000) please go to the website of the Regensburg Classification Scheme. This is the main location for books on higher education research. Literature on science studies (science history and organisation of teh sciences) is relevant for the field as well (please find an overview over these classes here). If not labeled otherwise, these books can be checked out.
• Course catalogues of domestic and foreign universities: The university library possesses an extensive collection of German and foreign course catalogues. They can mainly be found on the open shelves on the second floor (2. OG). They are partly shelved in accordance with the Regensburg Classification Scheme (e.g. shelf B2-3) or follow the old in-house classification for periodicals under the letters PA (e.g. shelf D1-7).
• Rare books and special collections (6. OG, Forschungslesesaal): Rare and historic materials can be viewed in the research reading room on the 6th floor. Books handed out here, are not borrowable.

For many questions in Higher Education Research a look at related subjects-1 can be worthwhile. Relevant studies can be found in the departments for educational sciences, sociology, history, or in the economics section.
